Studying the first galaxies with ALMA

چکیده

We discuss observations of the first galaxies, within cosmic reionization, at centimeter and millimeter wavelengths. We present a summary of current observations of the host galaxies of the most distant QSOs (z ∼ 6). These observations reveal the gas, dust, and star formation in the host galaxies on kpc-scales. These data imply an enriched ISM in the QSO host galaxies within 1 Gyr of the big bang, and are consistent with models of coeval supermassive black hole and spheroidal galaxy formation in major mergers at high redshift. Current instruments are limited to studying truly pathologic objects at these redshifts, meaning hyper-luminous infrared galaxies (LFIR ∼ 10 13 L⊙). ALMA will provide the one to two orders of magnitude improvement in millimeter astronomy required to study normal star forming galaxies (ie. Ly-α emitters) at z ∼ 6. ALMA will reveal, at sub-kpc spatial resolution, the thermal gas and dust – the fundamental fuel for star formation – in galaxies into cosmic reionization.

Alma: Galaxies and Agn

With the ability to see into optically obscured regions with more than an order of magnitude better sensitivity and spatial resolution relative to current (sub)mm telescopes, ALMA will provide a unique look into the physics of galaxy formation and active galactic nuclei. In this paper I summarize the ALMA potential for studying star forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei from the nearby un...

The Dust Attenuation of Star-forming Galaxies at z ∼ 3 and Beyond: New Insights from ALMA Observations

We present results on the dust attenuation of galaxies at redshift ∼ 3 − 6 by studying the relationship between the UV spectral slope (βUV) and the infrared excess (IRX; LIR/LUV) using ALMA far-infrared continuum observations. Our study is based on a sample of 67 massive, star-forming galaxies with a median mass of M∗∼ 10 10.7 M⊙ spanning a redshift range z = 2.6−3.7 (median z = 3.2) that were ...

ALMA Observations of Arp 220 and Dust Continuum Measurements of High-z Galaxies

We describe preliminary results for two ALMA projects – 1) imaging the HCN(4-3) line and H26α lines in Arp 220 and 2) measurements of the dust continuum in a sample of 120 high redshift galaxies to probe the evolution of the ISM masses. The HCN observations in Arp 220 at 1/2 resolution provide the first high resolution imaging of the dense star forming gas in this prototypical ULIRG. The HCN is...

Exploiting magnification bias in ultradeep submillimetre-wave surveys using ALMA

The surface density of populations of galaxies with steep/shallow source counts is increased/decreased by gravitational lensing magnification. These effects are usually called ‘magnification bias’ and ‘depletion’ respectively. However, if sources are demagnified by lensing, then the situation is reversed, and the detectable surface density of galaxies with a shallow source count, as expected at...

The ALMA Frontier Fields Survey - I. 1.1 mm continuum detections in Abell 2744, MACS J0416.1-2403 and MACS J1149.5+2223

Context. Dusty star-forming galaxies are among the most prodigious systems at high redshift (z > 1), characterized by high starformation rates and huge dust reservoirs. The bright end of this population has been well characterized in recent years, but considerable uncertainties remain for fainter dusty star-forming galaxies, which are responsible for the bulk of star formation at high redshift ...
